UPDATE: Gorakhpur to Honor Kriya Yoga Master Paramhansa Yogananda with a Spiritual Center
His birthplace is set to become a spiritual and yoga center. The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated ₹50 crore ($6 million USD) for its development, with the foundation stone likely to be laid on June 21, World Yoga Day.
Disciples from across the globe visit Gorakhpur to connect with Yogananda’s early life. Recognizing this deep devotion, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath approved the project, with ₹19 (2.3 Milliom USD) crore already released for land acquisition and construction. Plans include a museum showcasing his life and teachings, along with a statue to honor his legacy.
Born as Mukund Lal Ghosh in 1893, Yogananda spent his formative years in Gorakhpur before embarking on his divine mission to the West. He lived in the U.S. for 32 years, where he became a guiding light for seekers worldwide. In recognition of his impact, India issued a commemorative postage stamp in 2017.
Local residents speak of his mystical presence and the transformative power of Kriya Yoga. As his birthplace is developed into a center of pilgrimage, it will stand as a beacon of inner awakening for generations to come.
